The roots of the firm dates back to the 1940’s when Louis Israel and Tofee Kalil started practising as Israel and Kalil. During the Second World War the partnership disbanded and Louis Israel practised on his own. In the 1960’s Louis Israel was joined by Gene Simon and later Leslie Sackstein to create the firm Israel, Sackstein & Simon. Gene Simon left the firm to practice in Pretoria and the firm was then known as Israel & Sackstein. In 1998 Vincent Matsepe joined the practice and the name of the practice became Israel, Sackstein & Matsepe.

We have never been afraid to act for good causes no matter how unpopular and in the 1990’s and 1980’s we acted for Winnie Mandela whilst she was under house arrest in Brandfort.

In keeping with modern trends the name was shortened to Matsepes. However, the contributions of all the Directors of the past are acknowledged in our slogan – “EMPOWERED BY DIVERSITY ”DRIVEN BY A LEGACY”. In 2021 Matsepes merged with De Lange Attorneys (Paul De Lange and Sharon De Lange) and the firm will continue to practice for years to come.
